Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Hit Punjab and Northern Pakistan, Breaking Prolonged Dry Spell

Rain in Punjab

Rain in Punjab finally broke the long dry weather on Friday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rain hit several cities. The rain came from a western disturbance passing over northern Pakistan. It brought cool winds and relief from the heat. But it also caused power cuts and trouble in many areas.

In Lahore, the sky turned dark early in the morning. Then came thunder, lightning, and strong rain. Many parts of the city were drenched. People felt happy about the cooler weather after many hot days. But the rain caused power issues. Several LESCO feeders tripped because of technical faults and the rain. This led to power cuts in different parts of Lahore.

Faisalabad saw early morning storms near Fajr. Bright flashes of lightning lit up the sky. The rain cooled down the hot city. In Bhakkar, strong winds blew and heavy rain made it hard for people to move around. Roads became slippery and visibility dropped.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported similar weather in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Other cities like Multan, Jhang, Sargodha, Pattoki, Nankana Sahib, Sangla Hill, and Dera Ismail Khan also got rain. Rain in Punjab has not only ended the dry spell but also helped lower the temperature in many of these areas.

In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), the weather became stormy. Hail and scattered rain hit both mountains and flat areas. PMD said people in Swat, Shangla, Chitral, Dir, and Malakand should expect gusty winds and thunderstorms.

Rain also fell in Mansehra, Abbottabad, Battagram, Torghar, and Kohistan. Some places had hail. The southern region, including Tank, Karak, Lakki Marwat, and North and South Waziristan, also saw heavy rain.

Rainfall records showed 15 mm in Dir, 11 mm in Malam Jabba, 10 mm in Pattan, and 9 mm in Kalam. Light rain fell in Saidu Sharif and Chitral.

The rain made the weather cooler. In Peshawar, the high temperature was 21°C. In Chitral, it was 12°C. Dir Bala recorded just 9°C. In mountain spots like Kalam and Malam Jabba, the temperature dropped to between 7°C and 8°C.

Meanwhile, Karachi stayed warm and humid. Temperatures ranged from 33°C to 35°C. But due to high humidity, “it felt as high as 39°C.” PMD predicted that some thunderclouds could form near the edges of the city.

PMD also said rain may continue for the next 24 hours. Areas like Swat, Kalam, Murree, Hunza, Skardu, and Galiyat are likely to see more rain. Dry weather might return over the weekend.

Officials have told people and tourists to be careful, especially in mountain areas. Roads can become slippery, and fog or rain may make it hard to see.
