Government Proposes Rs 2 per unit Reduction
The federal government has suggested cutting electricity prices by Rs 2 per unit. This relief is planned for the second quarter of the 2024-25 financial year. If approved, it will begin in March. Consumers could save over Rs52 billion
Public Hearing for Approval
Power distribution companies have submitted requests to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra). A public hearing is scheduled for February 12. If Nepra approves, the reduction will apply to electricity bills for March, April, and May.
Who Will Benefit?
This price cut aims to help households and businesses. However, lifeline consumers, who use the least electricity, will not qualify. K-Electric customers in Karachi, however, will be included.
This move is part of the government’s plan to control inflation and reduce economic stress. Lowering electricity costs could offer temporary but much-needed relief.
Challenges Ahead
Approval from Nepra is essential. Officials will review economic factors and power companies’ stability before making a final decision.
Some consumers worry about the short-term nature of this plan. Will electricity prices rise again after three months? This concern remains.
Next Steps
The focus now shifts to the public hearing. Citizens are hopeful for lower bills soon. If approved, the price cut could ease financial pressure on many families.
This electricity price cut is a positive step. It aims to provide relief amid rising inflation. The government’s inclusion of Karachi consumers also marks progress. Now, all eyes are on Nepra’s February 12 hearing.
For now, people remain hopeful. Lower bills could make a real difference soon.
