Anti-Narcotics Force Claims 17 Millions University Students Are Drug Addicts

Youth drug addiction is rising fast in Pakistan. Officials told the Senate’s Human Rights Committee that over 17 million young people, aged 18 to 31, are affected. This shocking number came up during a recent meeting led by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri.
Massive Awareness Drive in Universities
The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) launched a campaign in February 2024. It started in 237 universities across the country. The aim was to raise awareness and stop drug use among students. During this campaign, 31 drug dealers were caught. Also, 140 kilograms of drugs were taken off the streets.
Lack of Data Worries Senators
Committee members showed concern. They said there is no clear data on why this crisis is growing. Senator Zehri criticized the Ministry for not running visible awareness campaigns. She noted the easy sale of vapes in Islamabad. She asked officials to take strong steps and provide a full report at the next meeting.
Schools Need Stronger Programs
Ayesha Raza Farooq, head of the National Commission on the Rights of the Child (NCRC), suggested starting awareness in schools. She said teachers and parents must be involved. Also, she added that lack of fun or physical activity makes students more likely to fall into drug use.
Steps Taken in Public Schools
The Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) is trying to help. In 432 public schools in Islamabad, they now run drug checks. They’ve added lessons on drug dangers. Mental health support is also given through Taskeen App and Umre Rawan. The committee asked the FDE to share all materials in the next session.

More Arrests and Community Support
DIG Islamabad shared numbers with the Senate. Since 2023, 78 drug cases were filed. 735 suspects were arrested. Police also seized 131 kilograms of drugs. He also talked about the “Friends of Police” program. This brings together citizens, shops, and schools to raise drug awareness.
UNICEF’s Efforts for Child Welfare
Sharmeela Rassool from UNICEF Pakistan also spoke. She shared how UNICEF and the Punjab government improved child health and nutrition.
