Teacher Shortage Solution: PMDC's Bold Step
Teacher shortage solution is a pressing issue in Pakistan’s medical and dental colleges. To tackle this, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has raised the retirement age for faculty members to 75 years. This move aims to address the shortage of teachers in medical and dental colleges and improve the quality of education.
Currently, there is a significant gap in faculty positions across the country. There are 187 medical and dental colleges that need 26,018 teachers. However, only 22,146 faculty members are available. This shortage has been disrupting medical education and healthcare training.
PMDC Deputy Registrar Imam Bakhsh announced the decision. It has already been communicated to all medical institutions in Pakistan. The council believes this step will retain experienced teachers for longer. It will also ensure that students continue to receive quality education and training.
Medical education experts support this decision. They believe it will help maintain teaching standards and minimize disruptions. However, they stress the need for a long-term strategy to attract more professionals to this field.
This step is temporary. PMDC has assured that more efforts will be made to recruit qualified faculty members in the coming years. This move is expected to ease the pressure on medical colleges and meet the growing demand for education.
While this decision is a step in the right direction, it highlights the urgent need for sustainable solutions. Efforts to improve faculty numbers must continue. Additionally, PMDC should consider incentives to encourage young professionals to join academia.
