The Ramzan Sugar Mills case has come to an end. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son, Hamza Shehbaz, have been acquitted of all charges. The case had been ongoing since 2017. It focused on allegations that the Shehbaz family helped build a drainage system for Ramzan Sugar Mills in Chiniot. The project reportedly caused a financial loss of Rs213 million to the national exchequer.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed charges against both Shehbaz and Hamza. They were accused of corruption in 2015 for allegedly helping with the drainage system construction. The charges claimed that public funds were misused. But after a long legal process, the Anti-Corruption Court dismissed all charges.
Judge Sardar Muhammad Iqbal Dogar said there was no strong evidence to convict the accused. Because of this, Shehbaz and Hamza were not punished. Shehbaz Sharif had been arrested in October 2018, and Hamza Shehbaz was taken into custody in June 2019. Both were later granted bail by the Lahore High Court after spending time in jail.
The case took another twist last week. The person who originally filed the complaint, Zulfiqar Ali, withdrew his statement in court. Ali told the judge that he had no objection to the acquittal of Shehbaz and Hamza. He confirmed that he had not been involved in filing the complaint. He also said that he did not know anything about the drainage system project.
Ali submitted an affidavit explaining that he had not signed any application regarding the case. He stated that he had no knowledge of the wastewater drainage project near the sugar mills. He also confirmed that he had no objection to the acquittal of both Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza.
The judge asked if Ali’s statement had been recorded before. Ali said it had not. The judge then made sure the affidavit was filed properly.
With this, the Ramzan Sugar Mills case is now closed. All charges against the Shehbaz family have been fully dismissed.
