Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a major electricity price reduction in Pakistan. This move comes as part of the government’s efforts to provide relief to consumers and strengthen the country’s economy. During a ceremony in Islamabad, PM Shehbaz revealed a significant cut of Rs7.41 per unit for domestic consumers and Rs7.59 for industrial users.
“The country cannot progress without a significant reduction in electricity prices,” stated the Prime Minister. He emphasized that this move fulfills promises made in the party manifesto and aims to boost economic activity.
New Electricity Rates
The substantial decrease means domestic consumers will now pay Rs34.37 per unit instead of the previous Rs45.05. Here’s how different categories benefit:
- Domestic users: Rs7.41 per unit reduction
- Industrial consumers: Rs7.59 per unit cut
- Commercial users: Rs8.58 per unit relief
- Agricultural sector: Rs7.18 per unit reduction
For example, a commercial consumer using 1,000 units will now pay Rs62,470 instead of Rs71,000, resulting in significant monthly savings.
Impact on Monthly Bills
The new rates will directly affect April bills across Pakistan. For domestic consumers:
- 1-100 units (non-protected): Bills reduced from Rs1,467 to Rs852
- Up to 200 units: Bills decreased from Rs3,530 to Rs2,302
- 300 units: New bill set at Rs10,209, down from Rs12,378
However, lifeline consumers using up to 50 units will not see changes in their bills.
Economic Benefits
PM Shehbaz predicted that this price reduction will trigger increased economic activities across Pakistan. The government achieved this reduction through successful negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), resulting in savings of Rs3,696 billion.
Additionally, arrangements have been made to address the circular debt issue of Rs2,393 billion. The Prime Minister also highlighted the problem of electricity theft, which costs the country approximately Rs600 billion annually.
IMF Agreement
The electricity price reduction came after negotiations with the International Monetary Fund. “We need to honor the conditions inked with the IMF,” the Prime Minister acknowledged.
PM Shehbaz also highlighted positive economic indicators, including a drop in inflation from 38% to 1.5% and reduction in policy rate from 22.5% to 12%.
He also stated that the economy has achieved fundamental stability and now, it’s time to achieve economic progress.
