NADRA has announced the launch of Pakistan’s first dematerialized digital ID card, enabling secure identity storage and verification on smartphones.
Pakistan’s first dematerialized digital ID card is now a reality. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) introduced it during its Silver Jubilee ceremony. Citizens can now store their ID cards on smartphones, eliminating the need for physical copies.
The digital ID card will be part of the Pak ID mobile app, ensuring secure and easy identity management. NADRA is also launching a digital verification system under the World Bank Digital Economy Project (DEEP). A pilot phase will begin on August 14, 2025.
A Historic Milestone in Digital Identity
The launch took place at a grand event at NADRA headquarters, celebrating 25 years of service. The event featured the unveiling of a commemorative coin by the State Bank of Pakistan and a special postage stamp by Pakistan Post. NADRA also introduced a book highlighting its journey and achievements.
Many leaders praised NADRA’s contributions. President Asif Ali Zardari commended its role in digital identity security. He encouraged NADRA to adopt new technologies. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted NADRA’s global recognition and its role in economic growth through data integration and AI modeling.
A Step Towards Digital Transformation
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi called the launch a major step towards digital transformation. He emphasized NADRA’s mission to expand services to remote areas and overseas Pakistanis. He also highlighted NADRA’s support for national security and law enforcement agencies.
The event included a documentary on NADRA’s journey and impact on Pakistan’s identity system. Major General (Retd.) Zahid Ehsan, NADRA’s founding chairman, reflected on its early challenges and its rise as a leader in digital identity solutions.
Senior officials, former chairpersons, and government representatives attended the event, marking a key moment in Pakistan’s digital transformation.
