Temperatures Soar High as Heatwave Grips Pakistan

Pakistan heatwave alert

The Pakistan heatwave alert is still active as temperatures rise sharply across the country. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that a powerful heatwave is affecting most regions. This extreme weather will continue for the next few days.

The weather is hot and dry all over the country. A high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere is causing this heat. The PMD says this system will stay active until at least May 20. Temperatures will remain 5 to 7°C above normal in areas like Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. In Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, the temperature will stay 4 to 6°C higher than usual.

In the last 24 hours, most plains experienced extreme heat. Turbat and Dadu reached 48°C. Dera Ghazi Khan recorded 47°C. Cities such as Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Multan, and Peshawar will continue to see temperatures between 40°C and 48°C.

Coastal cities like Karachi will feel hot and humid. Interior regions such as Dadu and Mohenjo-Daro may face highs above 50°C. The PMD has advised everyone to be careful. People should avoid going out in the sun during peak hours. It is important to drink a lot of water. Children, the elderly, and those with health issues are most at risk during the Pakistan heatwave alert.

The situation in Punjab is very serious. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has reported very high temperatures. On Thursday, Rahim Yar Khan recorded 45.4°C, while Bahawalnagar hit 44.5°C. Multan, Kot Addu, Bhakkar, and Dera Ghazi Khan all went over 43°C.

PDMA has warned that temperatures will rise even more by 4 to 7°C until May 19. Hospitals have been told to activate emergency plans. All medical centers must set up heatwave help desks and keep extra medicines for heat-related problems. The government is also running awareness campaigns on TV, radio, and social media.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said, “People should wear light cotton clothes and drink plenty of water.” He added, “Avoid working outdoors, especially between 10am and 4pm.” The government is making sure there is clean water in Cholistan and is watching the situation closely.

There may be a change in weather soon. The PMD says a westerly weather system will enter upper Pakistan on the evening of May 19. It may bring rain, thunder, or hail in some areas. These include Kashmir, Islamabad, Potohar region, northeast Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan. This may happen between May 19 and 20.

Until then, very hot and dry weather will continue in most areas. The Pakistan heatwave alert remains in place. People must stay safe and follow all advice given by the authorities.
