The capital police said, in a statement, they were called to a hotel in the capital's Palermo neighborhood. It's a leafy area. They had been informed of an "aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol".
The hotel manager said he heard a loud noise at the back of the hotel. When the police arrived, they found a man who had fallen from his room's balcony, the statement said.
Emergency workers confirmed the death of the British singer. He was reportedly found in the hotel's interior patio.
Buenos Aires police said Payne fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel in the trendy Palermo area. The fall caused injuries that were extremely serious." Medics confirmed his death.
Dozens of One Direction fans flocked to the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires after the news broke. Lines formed, spilling into the street outside the hotel. Police stood guard there. Forensic investigators left the hotel. Rescue workers removed Payne's body about three hours after the fall. Young women filming with their cell phones felt shocked and heartbroken. A makeshift memorial of candles and bouquets emerged in a short time outside the hotel. Payne was one of five members of One Direction. The band formed after they each auditioned for "The X Factor" in 2010. This was two years after Payne's first attempt to get on the show. At 16, on the second try, Payne sang Michael Bublé's "Cry Me a River." He was nervous at first, but the cheers and applause warmed him up.
After each singer failed as a solo act, the judges formed a band. They combined Payne, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson. Despite losing the competition, they became one of the most successful boy bands.

He had recently turned 31 in the UK, per his Snapchat videos. Payne was born in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, and is the youngest of three. He is an alum of the City of Wolverhampton College, where he studied music technology.
Payne was best known as a member of the famed British boy band One Direction. The band, which included Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson, formed in 2010 after they all appeared on the UK "X Factor."
Last year, he posted a video for fans on his YouTube channel. In it, he spoke about his family, making new art, and performing again after giving up alcohol. He thanked supporters for sticking with him through difficult times.
Earlier on Wednesday, Payne posted on Snapchat about his trip to Argentina. He mentioned riding horses, playing polo, and wanting to see his dog.
“It’s a lovely day here in Argentina,” he said in the video.
Payne had a 7-year-old son, Bear, with his ex, the musician Cheryl Cole from Girls Aloud. She was an "X Factor" judge during One Direction's season. Their relationship began years later. Payne was before engaged to Maya Henry, from August 2020 to early 2022. Henry released a novel this year. She claimed that their relationship was the basis for it.
Besides his son, his parents, Geoff and Karen Payne, and his two older sisters, Ruth and Nicola, survive him.
