The Lyari building collapse has left a deep impact on Karachi. A seven-storey building fell in Agra Taj Colony, killing 27 people. In response, the Sindh government has announced Rs. 1 million financial aid for each victim’s family. This step aims to provide some relief in this time of grief.
Immediate Action by Sindh Government
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani addressed the media. They confirmed the suspension of the SBCA Director General. This was done to ensure accountability. A fact-finding committee has also been formed. It will submit its report within two days.
Crackdown on Illegal Builders
Saeed Ghani shared that FIRs will be registered against those responsible. He also warned builders and contractors to follow the rules strictly. The public was advised to check No Objection Certificates (NOCs) before buying any property. This can help prevent such tragedies.
Builder on the Run
The builder, Mansoor Shah, is still at large. He fled after the collapse and switched off his phone. Police are searching for him. An FIR was lodged at Kalri Police Station. It claims the builder used poor-quality materials. The building had already received eviction notices in April and July.
Community in Mourning
Twenty of the victims were members of the Hindu community. Most belonged to poor families. Residents had reported hearing cracking sounds before the building collapsed. Rescue teams worked for three days to recover bodies from the debris.
Dangerous Buildings Under Scrutiny
Following the tragedy, five dangerous buildings have been evacuated. Over 50 more have been marked as unsafe. The government has launched a clearance operation to prevent further accidents. Eviction notices had reportedly been given from 2022 to 2024, but many claim they were not informed.
