Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s disappearance during an Islamabad protest has triggered political accusations and conspiracy theories. While his aides claim it was an innocent mishap, rivals allege a cover-up.
Barrister Saif Denies Secret Deals
Speaking on Geo News’ program Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath, the KP government spokesperson Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif denied rumors of a deal between Gandapur and institutions. “It is false that CM Gandapur has made any deal,” Saif said, addressing circulating theories.
Saif clarified that Gandapur had left his phone behind at KP House, which caused communication to break down. “I was also worried [as] no contact could be established with Gandapur,” Saif added. He noted that there was no arrest warrant against the chief minister and that Gandapur would have surrendered voluntarily if there had been.
Saif also downplayed the conspiracy theories about Gandapur's disappearance. “Strategy changes according to the situation,” he said, defending the chief minister’s actions.
Gandapur Claims He Stayed in KP House
Amid questions regarding his disappearance, Gandapur addressed the KP Assembly, denying that he had left KP House during the Islamabad protests. “Police raided the KP House multiple times [...] Listen IG [Inspector-General of Police]. I was there the whole night,” Gandapur said during a fiery speech in the provincial legislature.
Gandapur emphasized that despite the chaos surrounding the protests, he had not attempted to flee or hide. His claims came in response to widespread speculation, especially after police raided KP House several times during the night in search of him.
Khawaja Asif: Gandapur Played a 'Double Game'
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif accused Gandapur of “playing a double game” and escaping during the protests. Speaking to Geo News, Asif said, “I have been saying this from day one that this man [Gandapur] was a swindler.”
Asif alleged that Gandapur had not stayed in KP House as he claimed but had traveled to PTI leader Omar Ayub’s residence in Haripur. According to Asif, Gandapur used a back route through the Margalla Hills to reach Ayub’s home. He further claimed that Gandapur’s disappearance disheartened PTI workers, who were expecting leadership during the protests. “Neither their central leadership nor their Punjab leadership; no secretary, no chairman — it was just a number of workers” who participated in the demonstration, Asif remarked.
Asif added that PTI workers who were once supportive had turned critical of Gandapur’s actions. “Their workers, who were abusing us on social media until yesterday, are now cursing the PTI leadership,” Asif said, arguing that this betrayal would damage PTI’s ability to mobilize its base in the future.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar’s Criticism
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar also criticized Gandapur for abandoning his followers during the protests. Tarar called Gandapur “irresponsible” and claimed that he fled the scene of the protest, leaving behind his supporters. “They wanted to damage public property to destabilize Pakistan,” Tarar said, accusing the PTI of orchestrating chaos.
Tarar echoed Asif’s skepticism, asserting that the PTI’s plans had failed, and its narrative had crumbled in light of Gandapur’s disappearance. He claimed that PTI’s efforts to disrupt law and order were evident and that Gandapur should be held accountable for his role in the events.
