The Karachi road safety crisis is getting worse. Experts are worried about the growing number of deadly accidents. Many say the main reason is drivers not knowing basic traffic laws.
At a recent seminar at the Arts Council of Pakistan, speakers shared shocking facts. They said 98% of drivers in Karachi know how to drive a car but do not understand traffic rules or their responsibilities.
Drivers Lack Basic Knowledge
Law enforcement officers, doctors, and civil society members spoke at the event. They highlighted many causes of accidents. One big issue is the lack of knowledge among drivers.
Ali Suhag from the Sindh Police Accident Analysis Research Centre said most drivers are impatient. He noted that many people don’t even give way to ambulances. This attitude puts lives at risk.
Helmet Use Ignored
Another major problem is ignoring safety gear. Many motorcyclists do not wear helmets. Suhag shared a shocking example. A man said his son avoids helmets because they “ruin his hairstyle.”
This kind of thinking is dangerous. Experts say awareness campaigns are needed. Also, traffic rules must be enforced more strictly.
Hospital Cases Increasing Daily
Doctors also shared data on accident cases. Dr. Sabir Memon from the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma said road crash cases have increased.
“We now receive about 150 accident cases every day,” he reported. Most of the injured are young motorcycle riders. This shows how serious the problem has become.
Call for Government Action
Speakers urged the government to act quickly. They said better road safety measures are needed. This includes strict law enforcement and public education campaigns.
Without action, they warned, more lives will be lost. Simple steps like wearing helmets, following signals, and giving way in emergencies can save many lives.
