Karachi Hit by Series of Low-Intensity Earthquakes

Karachi earthquakes 2025

Karachi earthquakes 2025 continue to shake the city, causing concern among residents and raising questions about ongoing seismic activity. On Monday morning, another tremor hit the port city, marking the fourth low-intensity earthquake in just 24 hours.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the latest quake struck at 11:04am near Quaidabad. It measured 3.2 on the Richter scale and originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. The exact coordinates were 24.85° North and 67.23° East.

Just hours earlier, another tremor had jolted Quaidabad at 10:29am. That quake also registered a magnitude of 3.2 and had the same depth. In addition, a third tremor had hit near Gadap Town at 1:06am. It too measured 3.2 in magnitude but had a slightly deeper origin at 12 kilometers underground.

On Sunday evening, residents in several parts of Karachi felt another light earthquake. The tremor, which struck around 5:30pm, had a magnitude of 3.6. It also originated near Quaidabad, at a depth of 10 kilometers. People living in areas like Malir, Landhi, Shah Faisal, and Port Qasim reported feeling the jolts. Although the tremors caused panic, no damage or injuries were reported.

The PMD confirmed that Karachi earthquakes 2025 are connected to an active fault line near Landhi. Ameer Hyder, the chief meteorologist in Karachi, stated that the intensity of the tremors appears to be declining. However, no final prediction can be made yet. He added that these smaller quakes might continue for a few more days.

Seismologists explain that frequent low-intensity quakes help release pressure from tectonic plates. This may reduce the risk of a major earthquake. Geological engineer Muhammad Rehan pointed out that Pakistan sits on three major tectonic plates: the Arabian, Euro-Asian, and Indian. This makes the country vulnerable and creates multiple seismic zones, especially in urban centers like Karachi.

In recent months, seismic activity has increased across Pakistan. In April, earthquakes were also reported in parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including cities like Peshawar, Islamabad, and Lahore. Karachi, in particular, experienced a moderate earthquake of 4.7 magnitude earlier this year on March 31. That quake had its epicenter 75 kilometers north of the city and occurred at a depth of 19 kilometers.

So far, Karachi earthquakes 2025 have not caused any damage or injuries. However, authorities urge residents to remain alert. They advise people to follow official updates and stay calm during aftershocks.
