India’s mango export loss has made news after the U.S. rejected at least 15 mango shipments. The issue was not about quality. It was about missing or incorrect paperwork. This happened at major ports like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Atlanta.
Even though the mangoes went through proper treatment at a USDA-approved plant in Navi Mumbai, they were still blocked. The treatment took place on May 8 and 9. It included irradiation, which kills harmful pests. But U.S. customs did not clear the shipments due to documentation problems.
Why the Mangoes Were Rejected
The fruit met health and safety standards. However, without the correct documents, the shipments were denied entry. Exporters were left with a tough choice. They had to either return the mangoes or destroy them. Since mangoes spoil quickly, they chose to destroy them in the U.S.
Huge Financial Loss for Exporters
This mistake caused a loss of about $500,000. It was a serious hit during the peak mango season. Exporters work hard to meet global standards. So, a paperwork issue causing this much damage is frustrating.
The U.S. Is India’s Top Market
India exports more mangoes to the U.S. than anywhere else. That’s why this rejection has made such a big impact. Exporters are now demanding better systems. They want stronger coordination between Indian and U.S. authorities.
Exporters Call for Better Systems
Many believe this could have been avoided. A simple check or faster communication might have saved the fruit. Better digital tracking and clear processes can stop this from happening again.
Impact on India's Global Image
This is not just about money. It also affects India’s reputation in global fruit markets. Mistakes like this make buyers question how reliable the system is. That’s why exporters and experts are calling for quick improvements.
