EV production in Pakistan is growing as the government has granted licenses to 57 electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers. This step aims to boost local EV production and promote green transport. According to Radio Pakistan, 55 companies will manufacture two and three-wheelers, while two manufacturers will assemble four-wheelers. This move aligns with Pakistan’s long-term strategy to reduce fuel imports and shift toward sustainable transportation.
Govt Pushes for EV Growth
The government is committed to expanding EV infrastructure nationwide. New charging stations will be established in major cities and highways. These will include both fast chargers and battery-swapping stations, ensuring convenience for EV owners.
To encourage EV adoption, the government offers several incentives:
- Free vehicle registration – No registration fees for EVs
- Annual token fee exemption – EV owners will not have to pay this yearly fee
- Toll tax waivers – EVs can travel without toll charges on highways
Each province, including Islamabad, will have at least one designated EV zone. This initiative will not only support local production but also create jobs in the green energy sector.
Slow EV Production Raises Concerns
Despite strong government support, Pakistan’s EV production is not progressing as expected. A Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change meeting raised concerns over this issue. Senator Sherry Rehman pointed out that only 60,000 EVs have been produced so far, while the target was 600,000. The slow progress could delay Pakistan’s transition to clean energy.
To accelerate EV adoption, the government has cut electricity tariffs for charging stations by 45%. Federal Minister for Energy Awais Ahmad Leghari announced that the tariff has been reduced from Rs71.10 to Rs39.40 per unit.
The government has also simplified the approval process for charging stations. Businesses and individuals can now obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) within 15 days through an online portal. This will encourage private companies to invest in EV infrastructure.
Call for Green Financing
While these efforts promote a cleaner transport system, more financial support is needed. The energy minister has urged international financial institutions to provide green financing to Pakistan. These funds will be used to expand EV infrastructure and invest in renewable energy projects. With the right funding and policies, Pakistan can make EV production a key part of its sustainable future.
