The government abolishes job quota for the families of deceased employees. This follows a Supreme Court ruling that ended the practice of offering jobs to the spouse or child of a government worker who dies during service. However, the families of martyrs and victims of terrorism will still be exempt from this change.
Govt Implements Supreme Court Ruling
The Supreme Court ruled that the job quota scheme was unconstitutional. It stated that public sector jobs should be awarded based on merit, not inheritance. The court emphasized that jobs should not be passed down like personal property.
The Establishment Division has directed all ministries and provincial authorities to implement the new policy. This follows the court’s ruling from October 18, 2024.
Who Is Affected by the New Policy?
This rule affects all civil servants who pass away during service. Their family members will no longer automatically receive a government job. However, the Prime Minister’s Assistance Package will continue to provide other benefits.
The families of law enforcement personnel who lose their lives in terrorist attacks are not affected. They will continue to receive employment benefits.
Why Was the Job Quota Abolished?
The Supreme Court found that the job quota was unfair. It noted that public sector jobs should be open to everyone based on merit. The court also pointed out that the scheme unfairly favored certain groups.
Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan stated that laws must provide equal opportunities for all. The court ruled that any law that violates the constitution should be reviewed.
Strict Implementation Ordered
The Establishment Division has instructed authorities to enforce the new policy immediately. Ministries and divisions must comply with the ruling. The government will also ensure that current laws align with the constitutional framework.
