Glenn Maxwell announces retirement from ODI cricket, marking the end of a remarkable chapter in his career. The Australian all-rounder has decided to step away from the 50-over format to focus fully on the T20 World Cup and other shorter formats.
Since his debut in 2012, Maxwell has played 149 ODIs, scoring 3,990 runs and taking 77 wickets. He was a vital part of Australia’s World Cup-winning teams in 2015 and 2023. Known for his explosive batting, Maxwell maintained a strike rate of 126.70, one of the best in ODI history.
One of Maxwell’s most memorable innings came during the 2023 World Cup. Battling severe cramps, he scored an unbeaten 201 off 128 balls against Afghanistan. This innings helped Australia recover from 91/7 and secure a thrilling win. Many cricket experts consider this one of the greatest ODI performances ever.
Maxwell’s decision to retire from ODIs came after honest talks with Australia’s chair of selectors, George Bailey. He shared on the Final Word Podcast that his body struggled with the physical demands of ODI cricket, especially after a serious leg injury in 2022. “I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit,” Maxwell admitted.
He explained that he realized he wouldn’t be able to make the cut. Instead, he wanted to give younger players a chance to take over his role. Maxwell also emphasized he never wanted to hold onto his place for selfish reasons, and it felt like the right time to step aside.

The focus now shifts to the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
Currently recovering from a finger injury sustained during the IPL, Maxwell is expected to return soon. He will likely feature in Australia’s T20 squad for the Caribbean tour starting in July. With his explosive batting and experience, Maxwell will play a crucial role as Australia aims to defend their T20 World Cup title.
