In a key development for Pakistan cricket, PCB appoints Aqib Javed as the new Director of High Performance. The announcement came on Tuesday through PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s official account on X (formerly Twitter).
Naqvi called it a major move to boost Pakistan’s cricketing infrastructure. He said,
“To strengthen our cricket infrastructure, we are pleased to welcome Aqib Javed as the Director of High Performance. His appointment, alongside Mike Hesson as the white-ball Head Coach, marks a significant step forward in our strategic vision for Pakistan cricket. Together, their expertise and leadership will play a pivotal role in the development, evolution, and success of our national setup.”
Aqib Javed, 52, brings a long list of achievements to this new role. He played 22 Test matches and 163 One-Day Internationals for Pakistan between 1988 and 1998. A key figure in Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning squad, Aqib has also coached at both national and international levels.
He served as interim head coach of the Pakistan men’s team in the past. His coaching career includes a strong stint with the UAE national team. More recently, he worked with Lahore Qalandars in the PSL. Under his leadership, the franchise created a solid player development system. Aqib also discovered and trained young talent from across Pakistan.
The Director of High Performance position was vacant since Nadeem Khan stepped down. Now, PCB appoints Aqib Javed to fill this important role at a time of significant change in the coaching structure. Many new faces are joining the national setup while others have exited in recent months.
Alongside this announcement, the PCB confirmed Mike Hesson as the new white-ball head coach. Hesson is set to take over on May 26. He replaces the previous coach who left after the New Zealand tour in April. Hesson brings vast coaching experience from teams like New Zealand and Kenya. He is also currently the head coach of Islamabad United, the reigning champions of HBL Pakistan Super League.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan T20I series against Bangladesh may be delayed. The initial match was set for May 25 in Faisalabad. But since that date now clashes with the PSL 10 final, the series will be rescheduled. PCB will announce the new dates soon.
In another development, PCB confirmed that the Pakistan Super League Season 10 will resume on May 17. The tournament had paused due to political tensions but will now go ahead. The grand finale is scheduled for May 25.
