Is 'Emily in Paris' Really Worth the Hype?
Fans of the lighthearted comedy "Emily in Paris" might find the ending of Season 4, Part 2 surprising, which just released on Netflix. In the finale, Sylvie assigns Emily (played by Lily Collins) the task of opening a new office in Rome. There, she meets a new client and a new love interest, Marcello.
On the bright side, Emily is getting a promotion and the chance to live in one of the most romantic cities in the world. But on the downside, she has to leave her friends and her main love interest, Gabriel, behind. This twist hints that Season 5 will take place in Rome, at least for a while, raising the question: What is "Emily in Paris" without Paris?
Two fans, Pat and Rachel, sat down to talk about the show’s latest events, the big ending, and whether the series is actually good.
Gabriel and Emily’s Relationship
Patty: Has Gabriel changed his hair? He used to be cuter. Their on-again, off-again romance has been frustrating for four seasons. But Gabriel’s blunt speech to Emily, calling her out, was a great moment. Unfortunately, Emily's poor French caused a misunderstanding. Sylvie's stepdaughter mistranslated his words. It made it sound like he didn't want to see her anymore. As long as Emily is around, we’re stuck with this unsatisfying romance.
Bella: His hair is definitely longer, giving him a more rugged look. Despite Emily's years of studying French, she is only now able to string together full sentences. Better late than never, I guess?
Emily and Marcello
Patty: Marcello’s family runs a luxury cashmere business and hosts lovely lunches in a village. But Marcello isn’t Gabriel. Emily is more excited about the gelato than Marcello is himself. What do you think?
Bella: Marcello is a bit too perfect. He’s a charming, wealthy heir who wants a quiet life in Italy. He needs a little more edge to be interesting.
Will Emily Move to Rome?
Bella: Do you think Emily will actually move to Rome? I don’t think so. In Season 5, I expect her to spend a few episodes there, with Gabriel showing up to confess his love. Emily might reject him at first, but something will make her change her mind, and she’ll return to Paris.
Patty: I agree. Gabriel’s not going anywhere. But Emily would be crazy to give up her beautiful place in Rome to go back to sharing a cramped apartment with Mindy.
Is "Emily in Paris" Actually Good?
Bella: We’ve debated whether the show is “good.” What do you think?
Patty: It might not be “good” in the serious sense, but it’s not trying to be something like “Succession.” It’s a fun, stylish show that’s easy to watch. The costumes, created by Marilyn Fitoussi, are fantastic, and the writing is clever, even if it’s sometimes cheesy. The show pairs an American, Audrey Hepburn-like character with French actors. It feels fresh and fun, like a light, fluffy treat.
Bella: I agree. It might not be “good” in the traditional sense, but it’s great for what it is—pure entertainment.
Patty:Absolutely. See you in Rome next season!
