Now You Can Message without Internet, SIM or Phone Numbers with This New App

Decentralized

The decentralized messaging app BitChat is here, and it changes how people stay connected. Launched by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, this app works without internet, SIM cards, or central servers. It’s built for privacy, freedom, and independence. iOS users can now test BitChat through Apple’s TestFlight.

Bluetooth Powers Peer Connections

BitChat uses Bluetooth mesh networking. Messages hop from device to device, not through a central server. Even if users are out of direct range, connected “bridge devices” help pass messages along. This system helps people communicate in areas with weak or no internet.

No Phone Numbers or Servers

BitChat collects zero data. It doesn’t need a phone number. No messages go to the cloud. Everything stays on your device. This is different from apps like WhatsApp or Messenger, which rely on central servers and collect user data.

Secure Features for Real Privacy

The app includes:

  • End-to-end encryption

  • Password-protected group chats called “rooms”

  • Hashtags for chat rooms

  • A store-and-forward system for offline users

  • Upcoming support for Wi-Fi Direct

These tools support safe, flexible communication.

Inspired by Real-World Needs

BitChat takes inspiration from tools used during the 2019 Hong Kong protests. In places where governments restrict the internet, BitChat helps users talk freely. It’s also helpful during disasters or power outages.

Dorsey’s Vision for the Future

Jack Dorsey is already known for supporting decentralized platforms like Bluesky and Damus. With BitChat, he’s moving forward again. This isn’t just an app — it’s a push toward freedom from censorship and surveillance.
