Islamabad’s Brand New Underpass Gets Damaged After First Monsoon Rain

Serena Underpass Collapse

The Serena Underpass collapse in Islamabad has caused shock and anger across the city. After the first heavy monsoon rain, part of the newly built underpass caved in. This has raised serious concerns about the quality of construction.

A widely shared video on social media shows the damage. A large crater formed near the turning towards Srinagar Highway. Heavy machines from the Capital Development Authority (CDA) were seen trying to clear the rubble.

Fast Construction Now Under Fire

The Serena Underpass project cost Rs. 4.2 billion. It was completed in just 84 days and launched earlier this year. Three underpasses were built—one at Khayaban-i-Suhrawardi and two on Srinagar Highway. The collapsed section was one of these.

While it was expected to ease traffic jams, the failure has now caused traffic chaos and public outrage. Speed was prioritized—but quality may have suffered.

Public Reactions Raise Questions

Soon after the collapse, social media users voiced their anger. Many accused the CDA of ignoring construction standards.

People claimed that shortcuts were taken. Oversight may have been weak. Several users demanded a full investigation.

A clip posted on X (formerly Twitter) shows how the road gave way. Comments on the post blamed “shoddy work” and poor planning.

CDA Faces Mounting Criticism

The CDA is now under pressure to explain what went wrong. Officials have started clearing the site and inspecting the damage.

However, citizens want answers. The money spent and the hype around the project have only added fuel to public anger.

Experts are also questioning why basic infrastructure failed so soon after opening.

Infrastructure Needs Accountability

This incident is not the first of its kind. It reflects a bigger issue—lack of accountability in public projects.

Authorities must ensure that future developments are done with quality and care. Otherwise, taxpayers will continue to suffer the consequences.
