Punjab Assembly approves Thalassaemia Prevention Act 2025

Thalassaemia Testing Law Punjab

The Punjab government has passed a new law called the Thalassaemia Testing Law Punjab. It requires all students to get tested for genetic diseases like thalassaemia before they can be admitted to schools, colleges, or religious seminaries. This step aims to detect such conditions early and reduce future health problems.

Testing Now Required for Admissions

As per the new law, students must submit test reports with their admission forms. This rule applies to all types of educational institutes in Punjab. The goal is to find genetic issues early and reduce costs for families and the health system.

Data Collection and Confidentiality

Test results will be stored in a central database managed by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB). Labs must send results within 10 days. Importantly, privacy will be protected. Anyone who leaks personal data or gives false results will face strict punishment under the law.

Advisory Council for Implementation

An advisory council will guide the process. It will:

  • Set testing standards

  • Approve labs

  • Fix prices for tests

  • Suggest health cards for patients

This will ensure proper control and smooth rollout of the law.

Support for Poor Families

The government will offer free testing for low-income families. Also, patients will be registered with NADRA for easier financial support. If a student is diagnosed, they will get counseling and care to help manage their condition.
