Govt to Approve 200% Salary Hike for MNAs and Senators Amid Inflation

The federal government has decided on a 200% salary hike for MNAs and Senators. This significant increase aims to tackle financial challenges caused by soaring inflation. Currently, MNAs earn approximately Rs. 168,000 per month. After the hike, their monthly income will more be than double, helping them manage personal and professional expenses.
The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, introduced the proposal. It has received widespread support from coalition and opposition parties. The bill will now move forward for final approval in the National Assembly and Senate.
Mixed Reactions from Lawmakers
While most lawmakers supported the bill, some raised concerns about its timing. Opposition Leader Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar questioned the decision amid ongoing economic challenges in the country. He argued that the focus should be on addressing public financial issues. However, the bill’s majority approval reflects broad consensus among lawmakers.
Salary Parity and Additional Benefits
The hike also addresses pay disparities between federal lawmakers and their counterparts in Punjab and Balochistan. Both provinces recently approved similar raises for their legislators. Lawmakers have repeatedly pointed out the need for parity to match the rising cost of living across regions.
The increase will not only benefit MNAs and Senators but also extend to federal ministers, advisors, and senior officials. The Speaker of the National Assembly and Chairman of the Senate will see the largest raises. Their salaries are expected to rise to Rs. 1.5 million per month, aligning with inflationary pressures.
Swift Implementation Expected
The proposal is now under review by the Speaker, Prime Minister, and Finance Minister. Lawmakers have emphasized the urgency of its implementation. They argue that the hike is necessary to meet rising living costs and ensure financial stability for public representatives.
The government’s move reflects its recognition of inflation’s impact and its effort to align parliamentary salaries with regional standards. With overwhelming support, the bill is expected to pass with ease.
